The Government of Alberta has embarked on a major initiative to cut red tape by one-third to reduce costs, speed up approvals and make life better for Albertans and businesses. As part of this initiative, there is an opportunity for all (municipalities and clerks individually) to provide input on any processes, forms, etc... that are posing challenges in our day-to-day interactions with the Province.
It is the our understanding that they are seeking all feedback, both positive and negative, with each submission being reviewed accordingly. Following the review, there could be amendments to the Municipal Government Act, Local Authorities Election Act, as well as other regulations. Examples of processes that could be reviewed or challenged are items such as :
Timelines permitted to conduct a by-election (presently the legislation states that a by- election must be held within 90 days);
Process used to obtain a Municipal Order (presently the process takes upwards to 3 months);
Non-legislated requirement to report unofficial election results the night of the election (which proves to be cumbersome and unnecessary
